With degrees in Nursing and in Information Systems, both from the Catholic University of Santa Catarina, Artur Giovanella is one of the pioneers in Brazil in using technology to transform hospital processes such as medical auditing and revenue cycle management.
Equally passionate about healthcare and innovation, he was able to express and put this symbiosis into practice from very early on. Back in 2012, Artur and a college classmate, Patricia TerHorst, developed a project considered disruptive: a mobile electronic medical record for SAMU (Brazil’s mobile emergency medical service) and the Fire Department in the city of Jaraguá do Sul (SC), betting on Android (at the time, a still emerging technology that was little known for this kind of application).
Born from day-to-day experience and the need to eliminate paper in emergency response, the solution was created to speed up pre-hospital care and ensure the integrity of clinical data. More than digitizing, the project streamlines the patient’s arrival at the emergency room, allowing the hospital to prepare the environment and have the team ready before the ambulance arrived.
He discovered his teaching side
The impact and innovation of the initiative were recognized with a scholarship from the Research Initiation Program (Proinpes). The work became a reference project at the Catholic University of Santa Catarina and was carried on by other students.
Shortly after graduating, Artur pursued further study in a master’s program at the State University of Ceará, where he discovered his teaching side. In 2014, at the José Carvalho school in Fortaleza, he led a home automation project with voice recognition. Focused on accessibility, the prototype helped students with motor disabilities at that municipal school learn math and logic.
In 2015, at the State University of Ceará, Artur wrote an article that was selected for the book “Educação e métodos digitais: uma abordagem em ensino contemporâneo em pesquisa” (Education and digital methods: an approach to contemporary teaching in research). In the article, co-written with professor José Rogério Santana, the nurse and systems specialist reinforces his view of technology as a driver of learning and knowledge transfer, a vision he brought to healthcare.
An innovative platform
At Qualirede, a Florianópolis-based organization specializing in the management of health plan payers, he led from 2015 to 2017 the development of a platform that manages a portfolio of more than 1 million plan members. The software played a key role in automating the review of more than 27 million medical claims, resulting in significant revenue capture and contributing directly to the partners’ sustainability and profitability, work that was recognized by the Brazilian Congress of Medical Auditing.
The creation of the Dr. Marvin platform, in 2017, was the culmination of this journey, motivated by a personal experience: years of facing the grueling routine of manual auditing awakened in Artur the determination to solve this bottleneck once and for all. By combining his experience in hospitals with his experience at payers, he became certain that only a fast, intelligent tool could transform the financial landscape of healthcare.
This vision found the ideal partnership in 2017 when he joined Dynamix, in Blumenau, where aligned purposes gave rise to the Dr. Marvin platform, which automates the review of medical records, reports and clinical documents. The platform’s success came from a team that applied AI to interpret complex hospital data at a time when artificial intelligence was not yet center stage in the technology world.
Artur led the rollout of the solution at leading institutions in Brazil, such as the Sírio-Libanês and Oswaldo Cruz hospitals. The technology transformed these hospitals’ operations by reducing manual workload by 80% and cutting the average claim review time from four hours to just a few seconds.
Today, his focus is on developing advanced AI tools to revolutionize healthcare revenue cycle management and optimize data collection from medical records.

Artur, you bring together two passions in one heart, nursing and technology. Is Rivio a good place for healthcare professionals who want to move into the world of artificial intelligence?
Without the slightest doubt. We are revolutionizing the way healthcare auditing is done, and artificial intelligence is our engine. But for this AI to be truly powerful and human, we need something essential: the knowledge of healthcare professionals. Who better to help us build algorithms that understand the complexity of a medical record, the subtlety of a diagnosis, the ethics of a treatment?
How do you see the technology culture at Rivio, and how much can it change auditing in Brazilian hospitals?
The technology culture at Rivio is not just a tool, it is our DNA. We were born with the mission of transforming the healthcare revenue cycle, and that is only possible with a mindset that puts innovation at the center. We are not a healthcare company that uses technology. We are a technology company that solves critical healthcare problems.
What have been your best moments since you moved to Rivio?
I really value the experiences that repeat themselves, almost like magic, with every new client. A very special moment in my routine comes when we show the results of the first month of using our tool. It is a scene that repeats itself, but it never loses its impact. It is always rewarding, regardless of the size of the hospital and its revenue.
In your opinion, what makes a good fit for Rivio’s AI audit team?
Being the teacher that I am, I came up with a combination of three dimensions, and I gave them names. The first is what I call a Heart for Healthcare. You need hands-on experience in the sector. The second I call a Tech Mind. You need that technical curiosity and a taste for innovation and for what is new. And finally, but most important, a Spirit of Continuous Learning. Which I also translate as intellectual humility. AI is a field that changes every day. The ideal professional is therefore someone who is not afraid to say “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” Someone who is willing to test, fail, learn and test again.
Outside work, do you have an activity or a hobby whose lessons you bring into your day-to-day professional life?
I have an almost restless curiosity about areas that, at first glance, seem to have nothing to do with auditing. I like to dive into new courses and topics, looking for what we call “cross-pollination”: taking a solution from one world and applying it to ours.
Right now, for example, I am fascinated by the study of prompt engineering. It may seem purely technical, but the lessons I am bringing into my day-to-day are transformative.
Think about the chronic challenge of clinical progress notes that we face in Brazilian hospitals. They are often incomplete, ambiguous or hard to process. I am using what I learn about prompts to understand how we can guide our AI to extract real value from these notes, turning loose text into structured, valuable data for auditing.
The big lesson I take from these “study hobbies” is mental flexibility. When you allow yourself to learn something new, you train your brain not to accept “it has always been this way.” You start looking at everyday challenges through different lenses.
